Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality in China: An Immersive, Emerging World of Opportunity
Earlier this year, SpaceoutVR had the opportunity to join Plug and Play Tech Center and the Mayors of Silicon Valley on a technology tour of China in order to learn more about the innovation taking place in the far east in addition to sharing our own technology with the world. The journey included a 5 city tour which spanned over 10 days, where SpaceoutVR presented on stages across China for early- adopting VR consumers, investors and thought leaders from around the world. The technology tour began in Shanghai/Pudong and then went on to Chongqing, Zhangzhou and Beijing before concluding in Tianjin.
During this time, our Creative Director and CEO, V Owen Bush gave presentations at CEIBS Campus – Shanghai, the International VR/AR Summit – Chongqing, the Plug and Play Innovation Forum at CIFTIS – Beijing and the Grand Opening of the Tianan Cyber Park – Tianjin. In addition to this SpaceoutVR also participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony of the new Plug and Play offices in Beijing. You can view a photo album of our time in China here.
“I was astonished how ravenous Chinese consumers are for new experiences in VR.” I believe that Chinese consumers will the first major adopters of a VR-based lifestyle. Without a doubt, China is the Hot Pot of VR. The Chinese market is unique in the world software ecosystem because so many applications and app stores we take for granted in the west (Facebook, Google) are blocked in China. This has opened up many pathways for innovation from applications like WeChat. It will be interesting to see what emerges out of China’s parallel VR ecosystem. “ said V Owen Bush CEO of SpaceoutVR, Inc.
Other companies that participated included BrainwaveVR who presented their demo of Avatar facial capture directly from non-invasive brainwave data, Candy Lab, a company that provides Augmented Reality marketing initiatives around shopping, offering rewards and beacons in the world around you,
Sentience, a company experimenting with smells in VR, Greenlight, a company offering marketing insghts and data presentation in Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, Augmented Pixels, a company experimenting with real-life Drone control in a Virtual Reality environment, Imaginate, a company experimenting in many areas of VR/AR, The Rogue Initiative, a collective of content creators working with Michael Bay for projects in major Hollywood films in addition to VR games and entertainment and several others.
Participating mayors included Pat Showalter – Mayor of Mountain View, Kirsten Kieth – Mayor of Menlo Park, Michael Lempres – Mayor of Atherton, Rick Kowalczyk – Mayor of Half Moon Bay, Marilyn Librers – Mayor of Morgan Hill, David Haubert – Mayor of Dublin, Eduardo Martinez – Mayor of Richmond, Jason Pu – Mayor of San Gabriel, Lori Liu – Mayor of Brisbane.
“We are very impressed with the Chinese Market opportunity, with over 1.5 Billion digital consumers, it is by far the biggest in the world. We look forward to continuing our discussions with Plug and Play China, and the possible expansion of Spaceout.VR in China, in the next few years,” said Bush.
As the Spaceout.VR app community continues to grow worldwide, we’re considering approaches for expanding in new markets and are very interested in new opportunities in Asia, a population eager for new, immersive experiences in gaming, communications and entertainment.
